GOWF
Mary Queen o Scots played gowf on Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh. The name o the game maistlike comes frae a Dutch word, kolf, meaning a club yaised in a game a bittie like gowf.
Gowf has a hale language o its ain, wi wirds like mashie (frae mash meaning 'sledgehammer'). If ye need help tae cairry yer gowf bag, ye can get a caddie ( a wird borrowed frae French) tae help ye.
A White Star Line advertisement of 1929 read:
'Think of teeing off in the land where bairns cut their teeth on niblicks and brassies, and the nineteenth hole still survives - bonny Scotland, the gowfer's paradise.'
Bob Hope said:
'If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play at it, it's recreation. If you work at it, it's golf.'
