HALLOWEEN
The last day o October is halloween, the evenin afore All Hallows' Day. Ye can dress up and gang guisin roond tae freends' hooses. Gin ye tell a wee joke, sing a sang or say a poem, ye'll maybe get some sweeties, or nuts or aipples. Ye'll need tae tak yer tumshie lantern wi ye tae fleg the ghaisties that are oot on halloween. Tumshie is anither name for a neep.
On halloween ye can dook for aipples. Ye can hing up scones dunkit in black traicle or syrup on bits o string frae yer mither's washin line an try tae eat them wi yer haunds ahint yer back. If ye hae a whirlygig in yer gairden, wait until yer freends are jist aboot tae bite their scones, then gie the whirlygig a bit birl. Gin ye're still hungert, you and yer pals can eat chappit tatties straicht oot o the pat. Maybe ye'll find some money (wrappit up in greaseproof paper) in the tatties, sae tak tent whan ye're eatin them.
Halloween's comin, Halloween's comin,
Skeletons will be eftir you,
Witches' cats and big blaik bats,
Gaists and goblins too-
